Westboro Wall of Fame

I’ve done a few entries on the Westboro Baptist Church in the past. They’re the folks that make their name claiming that every bad thing happening under the sun is because God is judging the world for their sin (mostly homosexuality or for being “fag-enablers”). Never mind that, in the Bible, Luke 13:1-5 completely contradicts them. Does God judge people and countries by allowing bad things to happen? Yes, he probably does. However, we don’t know and aren’t qualified to judge, according to the above-mentioned passage, whether some calamity has happened because of God’s judgment or not.

One thing that caught my eye recently on the RSS feed from their web site was a little blast against Glenn Beck. The conservative pundit was recently diagnosed with macular dystrophy, which may or may not cause him to go blind. I responded to their hateful blurb by quoting the passage from Luke and warning them that they may end up being the victims of their own pronouncements. A few days later, I received a response from them, which has now been posted on the wall of fame on their web site.

Here’s their original post…

GodSmack: Blinding Beck

THANK GOD FOR BLINDING THE LOUD FOOL GLENN BECK.  He uses the bully pulpit that he has to blaspheme God and misuse and abuse His prophets.  Glenn Beck will manifest real blindness to match the perfect blindness and the dark heart God has given him so he is unable to see and understand His word.  God has struck him with Macular Dystrophy.

Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.  They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course. Ps. 82:4-5

They way of the wicked is as darkness:  they know not at what they stumble.  Pr. 4:19

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!  Isa. 5:20

Righteous Judgment!!

Now here’s the text of their little homage to yours truly, followed by my response…

You do realize that Beck is not actually blind, right, and that he may NEVER go blind?

Read Luke 13:1-5 and pray that God doesn’t destroy you.

Dear angry rebel –

How interesting that you invoke the wrath of God toward us for discussing the blindness that He has cursed Glenn Beck with! The wrath that you want for us is abiding upon you and Doomed america generally. You were appointed to wrath. You love your cursed lot so don’t get all Abraham Lincoln on us for connecting the dots on a scriptural / spiritual level for you.

The time is short. The destruction is imminent.  Glenn Beck is as blind as a bat!  Love it. Be one with that spiritual blindness, as you have been smitten with it as well.

Anathema, Maranatha.

This little nugget was written by Shirley Phelps-Roper (pictured above). I’ve seen her and her attention-starved hounds on television before and I’m sure they’ve made other appearances elsewhere.

I know what some of you are probably thinking…Why post about them and give them any additional exposure? Well, first of all, we’re talking about my blog here. I mean, come on. It’s not like my blog is internet destination one. I’m lucky to get 50 hits in a day anymore (perhaps twice that before changing my site’s URL). In other words, this little podunk operation ain’t gonna give them nuthin’. Most importantly, though, I believe the light of day needs to be shown on hatred and bigotry wherever it exists. I know they’re media hounds but the more people know about them, the better, in my opinion. Believers in the one true God need to stand in opposition to the wolves in the midst. Otherwise, the sheep end up falling by the wayside in the end.

Acts 20:28-31
(28)  Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.
(29)  I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.
(30)  Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.
(31)  So be on your guard.

Context Matters

I’m sure this post won’t win me any additional friends from my conservative brethren and it may lose me some. It needs to be said anyway.

Let me start by saying that, as the title of this post conveys, context matters. All too often in the media, comments are taken out of their proper context and twisted to fit someone’s agenda. Web sites like Media Matters and, yes, even the conservative Media Research Center, often do this. Now whether they do it purposely or simply gloss over the whole truth because of ideological blindness is another matter to be determined. The point is, it happens and it happens often.

The most recent and now well-known example of this is the case of Shirley Sherrod, the now (as of the writing of this post)  former employee of the Agriculture Department. Video of a speech Sherrod gave at an NAACP gathering was released showing her relating a story of how she discriminated against a white farmer back in 1986, or so we were led to believe. The video is fairly short and ends abruptly when Sherrod is finished sharing the story.

Now if that’s all you saw of Sherrod’s speech, you’d probably think what I did when I first heard it. It sounds pretty racist, doesn’t it? The problem is, she goes on to relate how she learned from that experience and repented from her racist views. The farmer she helped has also come forward to support her version of the story.

This story was broken by Andrew Breitbart on his web site BIGGOVERNMENT. Breitbart claims that he was given the clip and did not have the full speech available to him. On ABC news this morning, when pressed by George Stephanopolous, he also claimed that he believes the clip still shows racism inherent in the NAACP because the audience laughs as she relates the story about the farmer. Whether that’s true or not, I don’t know. I haven’t listened closely enough to the clip or to the entire speech to know if anyone in the audience is laughing. I do know that Breitbart is at least an imbecile for breaking the video in the first place when it’s impossible to tell the context of what was said. Considering the abruptness of the clip’s ending, he should’ve known better. In the Stephanopolous interview, Breitbart did his best to duck and weave in his attempt to paint the NAACP as racist, saying his intention was to show their bigotry and hypocrisy concerning their speaking out against racism in the ranks of the Tea Party movement.

Of course, some conservative commentators such as Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly also jumped the gun and blasted both Sherrod and the NAACP for racism. They are just as guilty as Breitbart in this case. Jumping the gun is dangerous because sometimes you also get shot by it.

Speaking of conservative commentators, Sherrod claims that when she was contacted and forced to resign by someone in the Obama administration, it was told to her that she “was going to be on Glenn Beck tonight”. To Beck’s credit, he did not air the video on his show that afternoon after it broke, though he did air it yesterday and discussed how it was taken out of context.

Lastly, the Obama administration is also culpable. As are the others, they’re guilty of reaching conclusions without full knowledge of all the events. As a side note, it’s interesting to hear that they’re monitoring Beck’s program. I thought they didn’t take Fox News or Beck seriously? But that’s for another time. I’m just sayin’…

FYI, you can view the entire speech by Sherrod here on Youtube.

Multiple BP Oil Leaks?

I’m not sure of the veracity of these sources, but there are reports that there have been multiple leaks all along and the one that we’ve seen on television and online that was stopped by the recently applied cap is not the largest.

While I’ve not been able to confirm the veracity of these reports, there was a story early on in the Washington Post that reported as many as three leaks.

Oil spill media blackout UPDATE for Tampa, Florida: Gulf oil spill sea floor leak now confirmed

Oil spill media blackout hides worse spill from BP’s third ignored oil leak

My Favorite Political Oops Moment

If there was ever one political slip-up that gave people an insight into the minds of Washington Democrats, this one involving Maxine Waters was it.

Honestly, it’s not something I didn’t already know but it’s pretty funny that she just couldn’t control her mouth spewing forth what’s obviously on her mind. Hilarious…My favorite political gaffe of all time.

Selective Outrage

A billboard similar to the photo above that raised the hackles of some folks and was apparently paid for by an Iowa Tea Party group has now been torn down according to an Iowa television station.

Some anti-Tea Party folks were blasting the sign as racist. On its face, that accusation is ridiculous. There’s nothing racist about it. While I understand the point of the billboard, which is to compare Obama-style socialism with more well-known socialist dictators of the past. Unfortunately, the message got lost in the translation.

To co-opt an Obama-ism, let me be clear…Whoever had this idea, while not a racist, is a complete moron. I understand the comparison but the whole Nazi thing has been totally overdone. Not only that, but the immediate comparison that comes to the mind of most people who might otherwise agree with the intended point, is a violent one. Hitler is responsible for the death of millions of Jews and other minorities that were not considered part of his master race. Lenin’s style of communism is also responsible for mass suffering and death. That’s not the connection you want to make with Obama and still be taken seriously.

On the other hand, you have lots of leftists out there decrying this billboard who were pretty quiet while the same kinds of accusations were being floated on a near-daily basis about President Bush while he was still at the helm. The hypocrisy from that angle is undeniable. Selective outrage at its finest. Gotta love it.

Polly Want a Cracka?

I hate white people, all of them. Every last iota of a cracker, I hate him. We didn’t come out here to play this game. There’s too much serious business going on in the black community to be out here sliding through South Street with white dirty cracker whore [BLEEP ] on our arms and we call ourselves black men with African garb on. What the hell is wrong with you, black man? You had a [inaudible] with a white girl on your damn arm. You want freedom? You are going to have to kill some crackers. You are going to have to kill some of their babies.

Isn’t that just beautiful? It’s pure poetry, isn’t it? It just sort of rolls right off the tongue. It’s prose of the highest order in the English language. This “man” should be very proud of himself for improvising such art of the highest order.

His name is Minister King Shamir Shabazz, a member of the New Black Panther Party. He is one of two members of this radical party who were filmed outside a Philadelphia voting precinct, intimidating voters during the November 2008 Presidential election. The Bush administration took the issue to court and a judgment had apparently been reached when someone within the Obama Justice Department ordered that the case be dropped. One of the official “reasons” given for the case being dropped was that Shabazz was ordered not to take a weapon near a polling place through 2012. So, is it okay to do that AFTER 2012? I’m just sayin’…

The Justice Department has also said that no voters had claimed any intimidation occurred and that there was “insufficient evidence”. Have the folks claiming this actually watched the video? It clearly shows the two New Black Panther Party members outside the precinct, dressed in some type of military garb and Shabazz wielding a nightstick. This also includes footage of the comments quoted at the beginning of this post.

J. Christian Adams, a voting rights attorney with the DOJ, who resigned because of this, wrote the following in the Washington Times…

That claim is false. If the actions in Philadelphia do not constitute voter intimidation, it is hard to imagine what would, short of an actual outbreak of violence at the polls.

Adams says the dismissal of the case “was motivated by a lawless hostility toward equal enforcement of the law.”

The current leader of the New Black Panther Party, Malik Shabazz, had this to say when asked if he condoned the comments by King Shamir Shabazz about killing “crackers” and “their babies”…

I’ll say this. The New Black Panther Party does not believe in going out on the streets and berating black people. We don’t believe in getting up and attacking our people in the streets. We don’t believe in telegraphing what we may or may not do.

So he’s more concerned about another black man being berated in public than a outright call to violence against innocent people? Nice.

When asked to clarify if he agreed with the killing of white “crackers” and “their babies”, Malik Shabazz responded, “Not in that context, no, sir.” So, let me get this straight…There must be a context in which it’s OK, then? Apparently, it’s that context where the baby is menacing and threatening toward one of his people. Yeah, that’s it. I’ve often felt threatened by “cracker babies” myself, ya know?

It’s just another in a long list of offenses against the Obama administration. I wonder what would’ve happened if the people intimidating voters had looked like these folks…

Healthcare Bypass

The longer President Obama is in office, the more he resembles the mirror image of former President Bush. Following yet again in his predecessor’s footsteps, Obama has made a recess apointment to fill the position of administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In case you’re not familiar with what a recess appointment is, it’s basically a way for the President to circumvent Congress when the appointee is a controversial one. President Bush used the tactic and now Obama is doing the same.

The President’s choice is none other than Dr. Donald Berwick, a Harvard professor and patient care specialist. The appointment is controversial because Berwick has been rather outspoken about the necessity of the rationing of healthcare.

The decision is not whether or not we will ration care — the decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open. And right now, we are doing it blindly.

Though the concerns of Republicans about the rationing of healthcare were largely laughed off during the recent healthcare reform debate, this appointment brings those same concerns back to the surface and gives them far more credibility.  This prompts conservative lawmakers to claim that healthcare decisions could be made based on cost, a rather slippery slope that we shouldn’t be going down. Liberals claim that rationing already exists and that we just need to get over it because this would provide the opportunity for more oversight and transparency in the process.

Now, the administration may claim that it was necessary to make the appointment immediately because it’s such an important position to assist in overseeing the new changes to healthcare law in this country. However, most of those changes are still to be made in the next few years and the post has been vacant since 2006 anyway, so it seems that claim is specious at best.

Consider the answers given by Robert Gibbs to some questions posed by a White House reporter concerning Berwick’s comments about rationing care and redistribution of wealth. Following is a video about Berwick and his beliefs concerning healthcare. The portion with the reporter’s comments and Gibbs’ answers starts around the 1:58 mark. Gibbs, of course, never answers the question and eventually attempts to turn the tables on the reporter.

Gibbs pulls the same old tricks…First, it’s all about the healthcare of the people being the important thing. That didn’t work, so he pulled the ol’ switcheroo by blaming those nasty, evil conservatives. You know, of course, that all they want to do is make the rich richer and the poor poorer? It’s those evil minions of Satan who want poor, African-American, paraplegic, mildly mentally challenged children between the ages of 3 and 11 to die tragically from an unknown infectious disease purposely spread by the U.S. government in an obviously racist attempt at exterminating Democratic voters.

Berwick will eventually be voted on. Most likely, however, the fervor over his socialist views will have died down enough by then that he will be confirmed. Here’s to hoping that isn’t the case, though.
