Socialism…Don’t Be a Howler Monkey

If you’ve followed politics at all over the last several years (or even if you haven’t), you’ve more than likely heard the word “socialist” or “socialism” used many times. Use of this term typically sends the howler monkeys, mostly on the left but some on the right as well, into an uproar. This is because, as you know (said with that snooty, elitist attitude, with nose in air), you just don’t know the classic definition of socialism, you knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, potato-eating simpleton, you! This is normally followed by accusations that you must be a racist or, at the very least, a hatemongering, right-wing, conspiracy-believing neocon. It’s a tried and true tactic to end the debate and paint the offending party as a dimwit. After all, if you don’t even know how to use the term properly, you must not be smart enough to understand politics at all.

The problem is simply this…  I don’t think the howler monkeys are really all that upset or bothered over the use of the “s” word.

The way I or other “neocons” use the term “socialism” may or may not meet the classic definition of the word. It really doesn’t matter to me in the slightest, however. When I see big government taking over large chunks of the economy, passing onerous regulations, purchasing and running private companies, and doing various other things typically thought of as occurring in known socialist countries, I’m going to call it socialism regardless of whether that meets the howler monkeys’ standards or not. I call it the American definition of socialism and, in my opinion, it’s close enough to the classic one whether the other side wants to admit it or not.

Another howler monkey trait is that of a short memory. During nearly the entire length of the George Bush presidency, there were constant cries of “Fascism!”. Their use of that word no better fit the classic definition of that term than does the similar usage of “socialism” now.

Anyway, save me the “Obama is not really a socialist” mantra. I understand what true socialism is but it’s not a big deal to me if people don’t use it according to its textbook definition. Making a big deal of it is simply a diversionary tactic to avoid putting more than two brain cells together and coming up with an actual cogent argument.

Do me a favor…Don’t be a howler monkey. Save it for something important.

    • I’ve just really grown tired of the hypocrites who snidely remark about how dumb you must be if you think Obama is really a socialist. This is the picture I get in my mind with these folks…
