…And Then There Were Two

Daschle Health Care

Perhaps my favorite all-time political moment was the day Tom Daschle was  defeated in his attempt at re-election in November 2004.  One of the Senate’s all-time biggest obstructionists was defeated and fortunately out of a job for awhile.

Unfortunately for all Americans, he’s BAAAAAACK!!!!!  He is President Obama’s nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary.  The problem is that he dodged paying approximately $128,000 in taxes until after he was nominated for the position.  Predictably, he claims it was just an “error” and that he is really, really sorry, man!

Unfortunately, he’s probably going to be confirmed if recent confirmation history has any bearing here.  Timothy Geithner was just confirmed last week as the Secretary of the Treasury after revelations that he had failed to pay nearly four year’s worth of taxes.

This, along with the Obama administration’s flouting of its new “no lobbyist” rule doesn’t give me any confidence that he is setting any better an example than the Bush administration did.  It’s noteworthy that the Bush administration has been publicly ripped to shreds over these kinds of indiscretions but little has been made in the mainstream media about the cracks in the ethical foundation that are already appearing in Obama’s presidency.  Where’s the accountability being demanded from the same media that seemed to go into an orgasmic frenzy whenever something like this came out of the Bush administration?  Perhaps it’s hiding in Chris Matthews’ pants?
