Barack Obama and the Magic Birth Certificate

I really hate having to do this but it seems some conservatives will brand you as a closet liberal or, even worse, a traitor if you defend Barack Obama in anything.  Anyway, what I hate is having to qualify myself all the time.  My qualifying statement is simply this…I am not a Barack Obama supporter in that I agree with his policies, beliefs, etc.  I am almost diametrically opposed in much of what I think, politically-speaking, to what Obama believes.  However, when I see something propagated that is definitely or likely untrue about him, I will speak out about it.

That something is the notion that Obama is not a natural born U.S. citizen but naturalized, and there is a difference between the two, and therefore does not have the legal right to become our President.  I first heard this rumor maybe a year or so ago while he was still campaigning for the Democratic nomination for President.  I’ve never heard any major conservative talk show host support this theory, though I must confess that I don’t listen to Rush Limbaugh and don’t listen very regularly to Sean Hannity’s show.

This is apparently the subject of a lawsuit, alleging that Obama cannot legally become the President.  In the lawsuit, Philip J. Berg of Pennsylvania claims that Obama isn’t a natural-born citizen and/or lost his citizenship when he was adopted in Indonesia or has dual citizenship with Kenya and Indonesia.  Berg is an attorney and has an active practice in Philadelphia.

Civil Action No. 08-cv-4083 alleges the following:

  1. Where was Obama born? Hawaii; an island off of Hawaii; Kenya; Canada; or ?
  2. Was he a citizen of Kenya, Indonesia and/or Canada?
  3. What was the early childhood of Obama in Hawaii; in Kenya; in Indonesia when he was adopted; and later, back to Hawaii?
  4. An explanation as to the various names utilized by Obama that include: Barack Hussein Obama; Barry Soetoro; Barry Obama; Barack Dunham; and Barry Dunham.
  5. Illinois Bar Application – Obama fails to acknowledge use of names other than Barack Hussein Obama, a blatant lie.

Berg goes on to say in the lawsuit, “If Obama can prove U.S. citizenship, we still have the issue of muti-citizenship with responsibilities owed to and allegiance to other countries.”

I can’t speak about the validity of the claims of his dual citizenship and whether or not that disqualifies him from being President.  I’ll leave that up to the courts to decide, whether they find any truth in those claims or not.  However, I did find some interesting information regarding the claims of whether or not he was born in the U.S. from FactCheck.org.

The skeptics are saying that Obama was not born in the U.S. and that the copy of the birth certificate posted on Obama’s web site is a fake because of the following:

  1. The birth certificate doesn’t have a raised seal.
  2. It isn’t signed.
  3. No creases from folding are evident in the scanned version.
  4. In the zoomed-in view, there’s a strange halo around the letters.
  5. The certificate number is blacked out.
  6. The date bleeding through from the back seems to say “2007” but the document was not released until 2008.
  7. The document is a “certification of birth” not a “certificate of birth”.

FackCheck.org was able to make some of the following conclusions about this after viewing the document:

  1. The certificate does indeed bear a raised seal.
  2. It is stamped on the back by Hawaii state registrar Alvin T. Onaka, who uses a signature stamp rather than hand-signing individual birth certificates.
  3. The certificate has all the elements the State Department requires for proving citizenship to obtain a passport.
  4. The document is a “certification of birth”, also known as a short-form birth certificate.  The long form is drawn up by the hospital and has additional information on it, including birth weight, parent’s hometowns, etc.  The short form is printed by the state and is drawn from a database containing fewer details.
  5. It’s been concluded that the halos around the letters in the scanned copy can be attributed to the scanning process.
  6. The certificate is stamped 2007 because that’s when Hawaii officials produced it for the Obama campaign.
  7. The blacked-out number, according to the Obama campaign, is due to their not knowing what the number represented and whether it would reveal any secret information.  They’ve since discovered that it’s fairly irrelevant and this certificate number has now been disclosed as 151 1961-010641.

They list other findings that can be viewed by reading the entire article here and talk about some other rather outlandish accusations that would require quite a conspiracy to have pulled off.

Based on the evidence they provide, there is nothing to indicate that Obama is not a natural-born U.S. citizen.  As I said previously, I can’t intelligently comment about the allegations that he may have lost his natural born citizenship rights in regards to being a dual citizen but due to the apparently unfounded accusations about his natural-born status, I’m inclined to not believe those allegations at all, either.

  1. The question is not IF there will be an interdiction of Obama’s Presidency by the Supreme Court, the questions are WHEN and HOW that interdiction will transpire — that is, if the USA is to continue as the Constitutional Republic that now exists.

    • It seems like the evidence will need to be much stronger about his supposed dual-citizenship, though, than it is about the supposed fake birth certificate.

    Well said.

Obama was not born in Kenya. This is all made up. Even the grandmother tape is all made up. If you listen to it, you can clearly hear her saying that Obama was born In Hawaii.

As for the theory that “a natural born citizen” is different from a citizen who was born in the USA, and that a “natural born” citizen requires two parents who were citizens before the birth: That is baloney too. British common law held that a “natural born subject” was simply one who was born in the British Realm.
