Roland Burris Denied?

Senate Democrats today are expected to deny entrance to Roland Burris into their ranks.  Burris was appointed by beleaguered Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently, Blagojevich has allegedly been caught on tape saying that he would trade Barack Obama’s vacated Senate seat for money, favors, etc.  However, he has yet to be impeached or indicted for any crimes.

In my opinion, the Democrats are making a really huge mistake on this one.  Like it or not, Blagojevich still has the legal authority to make the appointment.  While I understand their unwillingness to accept an appointment from a governor who’s been accused of a serious crime, I also think they need to swallow their pride and allow the entrance of Burris.  Adding to their pathetic position, they also missed the opportunity to request a special election, which would have rendered this whole issue moot.

I agree that, considering the circumstances, Blagojevich probably should have restrained himself from making the appointment.  Morally, it is a problem, so I can sympathize with those who don’t think Burris should be seated as a Senator.  However, they may end up losing in the legal arena.
